Local guide
Pagosa Springs, our way
Twenty-odd years of trips distilled down. There's a printed version of this in the kitchen drawer with notes scribbled on it — add yours.
Soak
The Springs Resort
23 terraced mineral pools right on the San Juan River. Go at night when it's snowing.
Overlook Hot Springs
Smaller, quieter, downtown rooftop tubs. Reserve ahead on weekends.
Healing Waters
Old-school, low-key, cheapest of the three.
Winter
Wolf Creek Ski Area
45 minutes up the pass and the most snow in Colorado. No crowds, no reservations.
Nordic at Turkey Springs
Groomed and ungroomed cross-country loops 15 minutes from the cabin.
Snowmobiling
Rentals in town; the Piedra and Turkey Springs areas are the classics.
Summer & fall
Piedra River Trail
Easy river miles, deep canyon walls, great with kids and dogs.
Williams Creek & Fourmile Falls
Alpine lake and a 300-foot waterfall — our favorite day hike.
Treasure Falls / Wolf Creek Pass
Fifteen-minute stop with a big payoff on the way to the pass.
Aspen color
Late September on Fourmile Road is absurd. Bring the good camera.
Eat & stock up
Rise & Shine Bakery
Get there before 9 or the cinnamon rolls are gone.
Riff Raff Brewing
Geothermally heated brewery downtown. Green chile is the move.
Kip's Grill
Fish tacos on the patio after a hike.
City Market
Full grocery run before you head up the hill — nothing is open late out here.
